Concrete Phase: Hear and Experience the Sound
Today we will learn the short vowel sound /æ/, the sound made by the letter a in words like apple, ant, and cat.
The teacher slowly says the sound: /æ/ … /æ/ … /æ/.
Students place their hands lightly under their chins and repeat the sound several times. They notice that their mouths open wide and their tongues stay low while making the sound.

The teacher says each word slowly. Students repeat and stretch the beginning sound:

Pictorial Phase: Connect the Sound to Pictures and Symbols
The teacher shows pictures of familiar objects whose names begin with the short vowel sound /æ/.

Students say the name of each picture and identify the first sound they hear.

The teacher mixes pictures that start with different sounds. Students sort the pictures into two groups:
- Words that begin with /æ/
- Words that begin with another sound
As students sort, they say the sound aloud:

Abstract Phase: Recognize and Use the Isolated Sound
Students now focus on hearing and saying the sound without pictures.
The teacher says a series of words. Students listen carefully and raise a hand whenever they hear the short vowel sound /æ/ at the beginning.
